Clinton spokesman resigns for calling "stupid" to the Pentagon
The State Department spokesman, Philip Crowley, resigned over a controversial remarks in which he criticized the Pentagon for the conditions of detention of the soldier Bradley Manning, who was suspected of leaking confidential documents thousands of U.S. to WikiLeaks.
"Given the impact they have had my comments, for which I fully assume my responsibility, I have submitted my resignation as Secretary of State for Public Affairs and State Department spokesman," Crowley said in a statement, calling the deal this week which gives the Department of Defense to Manning as "ridiculous, counterproductive and stupid." Several human rights organizations like Amnesty International have criticized the detention conditions of Manning, whose lawyer claimed in early March that the soldier is receiving treatment abuse and 'inappropriate' in the military prison in Quantico, Virginia. According to this information, Manning is confined 23 hours a day in a cell almost devoid of furniture, without a pillow, blankets and personal items.
In addition, he is forced to sleep naked, allegedly to ensure safety and prevent it from committing suicide with "the rubber of your underwear", as said an official of the base on which it is held. The U.S. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, said he accepted with regret the resignation of his spokesman, who, according to several U.S. media and journalists covering the information from the Department of State has not taken too well.
The head of the government's foreign policy praised Barack Obama, despite the "deep devotion to public policy and public diplomacy" of Crowley, and highlighted the service he has rendered with "distinction" to the United States over more than three decades in military uniform and civilian.
"I wish him well," said Clinton, who announced that he was until recently spokesman for the National Security Council, Mike Hammer, will serve in an interim time. Crowley was a respected spokesman for the National Security Council under former President Bill Clinton, was appointed by the chief U.S. diplomat State Department spokesman, which took office on May 26, 2009.
But recently, Obama moved to Mike Hammer to the State Department, with the plan, according to the American press, "that would replace Crowley, but the change has been accelerated by the statements made so far said.
Last week, at an event with a small audience at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, Crowley was asked about his opinion and that WikiLeaks "torturing a prisoner in a military prison." Crowley did not respond directly to accusations of being tortured to Manning, but he replied that they did their colleagues in the Pentagon was "ridiculous, counterproductive and stupid."
"However, Bradley Manning is in the right place," added the spokesman today before adding that there are times that Washington "needs secrets" to generate "diplomatic progress." His remarks generated unease in the ranks of the Pentagon and the president was asked on Friday at a press conference by the criticism of Crowley.
